The Multiverse

A glowing ribbon of white light glows against a velvet black background. It curves, undulates in soft waves, bright in the center, pale and fuzzy at the edges.

Come closer. Focus on the brilliant center of the ribbon.

The colors are stronger now, lines of them, smaller ribbons, all twisting together. Winding over and around each other, their individual hues visible, but still blending together. Still shading into white.

Closer.

The colors separate, define. Each ribbon is unique now, it’s own band of color turning and weaving around the others without touching. Intertwined, but separate. Moving nearer or farther from one another but never, never coming together. An infinite chromatic range, so very close, and so very alone.

And closer still.

Rancho Pasillo California

The City, Prime

Rancho Pasillo, Ca

Rancho Pasillo, California

With its strip malls, and housing tracts, and sprawling downtown where the tallest building is only 10 stories, Rancho Pasillo is a different kind of city, attracting a different kind of Hero.

Here, they don’t swoop through a rainy night to knock out villains in dumpster-filled alleys, or engage in brooding rooftop banter with their enemies while the pitiless moon watches impassively.

This is the Golden State.

And if people here know anything, it’s how to look good.

In Rancho, you’re more likely to run into the Sterling Starling front row, center at the latest off-off Broadway production, or Ethereal Specter brunching at the neat little farm-to-table bistro that opened down on Del Paso. Trident patrols the beaches while working on his tan, and Doctor Nuclear sometimes runs shows for kids at the Discovery Museum.

And it’s not just their images. California heroes are simply their own breed.

Of course, so are the villains.

Juniper "Juni" Harroway

Pronouns: she/her

Biography:
Juniper, Juni for short, is a high powered and inexperienced sorceress. After her own powers emerged, she discovered her late grandfather was the hero Thaumaturge who had abilities like her. However, he was lost years before in a fight that stopped a great and terrible force.

The rest of her family does not have powers so she self isolates from them whenever possible. Juni started doing hero work as a way to learn about her powers and give her something to do away from her family. Until she joined the team she was pretty much a loner, not wanting to risk other people’s safety.

Phantom

Pronouns: they/them

Biography:
Noah Wilson was born in a different dimension than Prime. As the only child of a pair of researchers, who worked long hours into figuring out space travel, Noah was often left alone. It wasn’t uncommon for children to be left on their own and to seek out their own methods of gaining knowledge or skills, but Noah often found themselves alone far more often than any other kid their age. They sunk most of their time outside of learning and developing skills into reading about fantasy and sci-fi worlds, longing for the chance to explore.

Since Noah was reserved and shy, they didn’t have many friends and passed the time mainly solo. This was until Ollie showed up and took them from their dimension. Once Noah left, they discarded their old name and became Phantom - a “ghost” who never really lingered or touched places or people. Phantom took to their new life with eagerness and never looked back; or so they said.

They traveled to various dimensions, sometimes alone, sometimes good or bad places, but always returning to Ollie’s side. Phantom never spoke of their experiences and the troubles or trauma they suffered outside of Ollie. When they went to his home dimension, Prime, Ollie’s device malfunctioned and exploded, killing them. Phantom chose to stay after burying him, unsure of their next step.

The Reformed

Aaron Riley

Pronouns: he/him

Biography:
Feedback was once one of the hottest things on the supervillain scene. Showing up in viral media, publicly embarrassing the police and superheroes alike, with an ever-growing fandom as he caused puckish chaos.

That all changed.

While pulling a job alongside the mad villain Freakshow, he found himself forced to choose between preventing thousands of innocent deaths or letting Freakshow get away with a chemical weapon. In the end he betrayed and defeated the madman, destroying his own villainous reputation in the process. Since then he's been desperately trying to find a way to make things right... Even if that means starting from the bottom as he tries to live up to the mantle of hero he's chosen.

The GM

Lee Alder Ketcham Seguinte

Pronouns: he/him

Biography:
Lee ran role playing games long before he ever actually played one, and generally prefers it that way. He doesn't consider himself a fan of super heroes, but fell in love with Masks both for the way its system supports the stories it tries to tell, and how flexibly it can accommodate different settings and tones. (Also, the game is directly responsible for his marriage. But that's just a bonus.)

The fact that Otherwhere exists at all rather surprises him, because it was proposed as a pipe dream. He never expected that he'd find people into a Sliders-but-with-teen-superheroes actual play, much less that they'd dive in as enthusiastically as they have. But he's thrilled this is the case.

He prefers character-driven, storyline heavy games, with simple, non-intrusive mechanics.  Really, he probably should be facilitating collaborative storytelling, and not running a game at all. But his players are willing to tolerate him anyway.

Powers

  • Dimension building

  • Fictional biographies

  • What's the opposite of networking?

  • A passion for graphic design
